Complete Eye Exams
Treating Patients in Rochester Hills and Troy, Michigan
At Oakland Eye Clinic we offer complete eye exams to all of our eye care patients and their families in Rochester Hills, Detroit, and throughout Michigan. Routine eye exams are a very important part of preventative healthcare.
Often, patients may not be aware that eye problems exist until they have a complete eye exam. This is because many eye diseases and irregularities have no obvious symptoms at first.
To preserve your eye health and prevent vision loss, we strongly recommend comprehensive, routine eye exams and eye care, at least once a year for patients with generally healthy eyes and up to twice or three times a year for those who are at risk for developing eye problems, such as diabetes sufferers.
When you visit us for your complete eye exam, we will perform a range of tests to determine your eye health. Some of these may include but are not limited to the following:
Your Eye Health History
The first step during a comprehensive eye exam is to determine your history. At this time, our Dr. Hakimzadeh will ask you about any vision or eye problems you may have noticed in the past as well as any problems or irregularities you may be experiencing now.
If you have visited another eye care professional in the past, we will want to know why and will also attempt to get your history file from that practice, if possible.
A review of your health history allows us to better gear the eye exam toward your needs.
Your Visual Acuity
Next, we will examine how well you see at various distances to determine whether you will need any vision correction treatments such as prescription glasses, contact lenses, or a LASIK procedure in Michigan.
During this test, Dr. Hakimzadeh will ask you to read letters and numbers at various distances to determine how well you see. Normal, vision is 20/20. Any refractive errors will affect this number and allow us to determine whether you are nearsighted or farsighted.
If you have very small refractive errors, often you will not notice it until you undergo visual acuity testing. However, just because your refractive errors may be small, it does not mean you are able to drive safely and perform other daily tasks with low vision ability.
We recommend that you undergo a visual acuity test at least once a year.
Preliminary Tests
Based on what we learn during your health history evaluation and visual acuity, we will most likely perform preliminary tests that will help us determine whether you suffer from any other irregularities that may affect your vision and normal function of your eyes.
During the preliminary testing, Dr. Hakimzadeh will most likely examine your color vision, eye muscle movements, side vision or peripheral vision, depth perception, and how your pupils respond to light. If any irregularities are detected during this time, we will then perform more in-depth testing.
Contact Lenses Evaluation and Fitting
If you need contact lenses, Dr. Hakimzadeh will perform several tests in order to best fit you for contact lenses that will provide you with maximum comfort and best vision.
This exam will also involve keratometry, which measures the curvature of the cornea, the outer surface of the eye, by focusing light on it and measuring its reflection. This will also determine whether you have astigmatism and may need special lenses to enjoy the best vision possible.
If you suffer from cataracts, contact lenses may not help improve your vision and you may need a surgical procedure. Dr. Hakimzadeh has helped countless cataract surgery patients achieve better vision with intraocular lens implants and removal of cataracts.
LASIK Candidacy
If you suffer from refractive errors, but do not wish to wear glasses or contact lenses, Dr. Hakimzadeh will be more than happy to determine your candidacy for LASIK. LASIK is a laser vision correction surgery that restores your vision to near 20/20.

Eye Disease and Disorders Evaluation
During this testing phase, Dr. Hakimzadeh will perform several small tests to make sure you have not developed any eye diseases and irregularities such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, cataracts, or glaucoma.
She will first examine the external health of the eye by looking at the cornea, eyelids, conjunctiva, and the surrounding tissues of the eye.
Next, she will evaluate the eye’s natural lens for signs of cataracts, the retina and posterior sections of the eye, which is accomplished through a dilated pupil testing to better view the internal health of the eye.
Finally, Dr. Hakimzadeh will perform tonometry, which measures the pressure in the eye. Elevated eye pressure can be a sign of glaucoma.
Further Eye Health Evaluation
Any supplemental testing will be determined based on the results above. If we notice any irregularities or risks that can affect your eye vision and health, we will immediately use advanced testing techniques to determine what may be the cause and what would be the best treatment option for you.
If you have any questions during your comprehensive eye exam, please don’t hesitate to ask. We will be more than happy to walk you through each step and educate you on the best vision and eye health practices.
