Understanding the Lasik Procedure

Lasik procedure is the best way to improve vision and get rid of glasses and contact lenses forever. Its purpose is reshaping the cornea and improving your vision ability.

It is important to understand the procedure, including the pro-operative and post-operative processes so you will know exactly what the procedure involves and for the whole procedure to go smoothly and effectively. For nearsighted patients, the procedure makes the cornea flatter and for farsighted patients, it makes the cornea steeper.

Before laser eye surgery, our Rochester Hills eye doctor performs an eye exam to check the eyes and general health condition and also maps the patient’s cornea. The doctor will check the health history and medications of the patient to make sure the Lasik surgery will not harm the patient in any way.

It is important not to wear contact lenses for 2-3 weeks before the procedure, because the contacts can alter the natural shape of the cornea, and the patient will get wrong results in the eye examination. Before the procedure, the eye doctor puts anesthetic eye drops to make sure the patient will not feel any pain during the surgery. Then the patient will sit on a recliner chair to finally do the surgery.

The Lasik procedure is painless, simple, and relatively very short. The doctor will position the patient’s eye under the laser and mark the cornea before creating a flap. Then the surgeon adjusts the laser by his computer. The patient will look at a light for a short time while the laser sends pulses to the cornea. The patient will not feel any pain during the surgery, but a little pressure on the eye may be possible. A thin flap is created in the cornea, and after it reshaped, the cornea will be covered again with the flap and no stitch or bandage will be required.

When the surgery is over the patient can rest couple of minutes, and then he or she can go back home. It is possible to return to work the next day, although a rest at home for a couple of days will be better. The patient will return to the eye doctor the day after the surgery for a follow-up meeting, to check the eye condition and make sure the surgery succeeded. He or she should not rub the eye after the surgery and follow any instruction received by the eye doctor. A few days later, the patient will notice improved vision, and he or she can return to normal activities.

The procedure involves little to no discomfort for the patient. It might sound a little scary, but it is a perfectly safe procedure and extremely successful. Most people achieve 20/20 vision after the Lasik procedure. The entire procedure takes less than ten minutes but its results stay forever. The patient will not be dependent anymore on glasses and feel healthy and free to see the world through his or her eyes. Dr. Hakimzadeh from Oakland Eye Clinic helps her patients achieving that result and offers a free Lasik consultation to answer any questions regarding the procedure.
