What Are Cataracts?
A cataract is the clouding of the clear, natural lens of the eye. The exact cause of cataracts is unknown, although it is thought that cataracts are caused by genetic as well as aging, and they are mostly seen in older individuals.
A cataract can develop in one or both eyes. In rare occurrences, teens and young adults can develop cataracts as well.
Cataract Causes and Prognosis
Cataracts are caused by the clumping of protein found in the natural lens of the eye. The natural lens is designed to allow light to pass through into the retina located behind the eye where images are recorded.
In fact, the process works much like a photo camera. The natural lens is mostly comprised of water and protein. Over time, the protein clumps together, thereby clouding the eye’s natural lens, which is called a cataract. In some patients, the protein may become discolored thereby adding a brownish tint to vision. This is also a cataract.
Cataracts can be caused by a number of reasons, including:
- Aging
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- Prolonged exposure to sunlight
- And unknown/genetic causes
Once you develop a cataract in one or both eyes, you will experience blurry vision that cannot the fixed with contact lenses and eyeglasses. Cataracts often continue to grow in size, thereby, clouding vision completely.
The only treatment option is to surgically remove the clouded lens and replace it with an artificial lens to restore vision.
The prognosis after cataract surgery is very promising and most patients are able to experience sufficient, clear vision they had prior to developing cataracts.

Cataract Surgery
There are a few different types of cataract surgery. At Oakland Eye Clinic we treat our cataract surgery patients with the most advanced cataract surgery technique called phaco (phacoemulsification) cataract surgery or small incision cataract surgery.
The procedure is completed within an hour or so under local anesthesia or eye-numbing solution so you will not feel any discomfort.
During phaco cataract surgery, a tiny incision is made on the surface of the cornea and a small hand-held device is inserted through the incision to emit ultrasound waves and assist in breaking up the eye’s natural lens, which is then easily suctioned out of the eye.
The lens is then replaced with an artificial implant or IOL, which acts just like the eye’s natural lens, thereby restoring your vision and allowing you to see clearly just like you did prior to developing cataracts. Cataract Surgery Recovery and Expectations
Cataract surgery recovery usually lasts a few weeks, during which time you will see our cataract surgeon on a regular basis. Most discomfort and eye discharge will subside within two to three days.
After this time, you will be asked to protect your eye from the sun, any chemicals, and avoid rubbing the eyes. A patch may be a word for the first few days to help minimize the risk for bacteria and debris entering the eye and increasing your chances for post-surgery complications.
