How Does LASIK Work?

Here is how a LASIK procedure works: A thin flap is created on the corneas using a laser, or using a thin blade called a microkeratome, which will allow your surgeon access to your cornea, which is where the correction will take place.

Your cornea will be reshaped in a unique fashion – it will be formed to correct your specific eyesight problems. This will only take a couple of minutes.

Then the flap is positioned back in place over your cornea for healing. The healing process is fairly quick, and the stitches are not necessary.

What are the risks of getting LASIK?

It is common for eyesight to be blurry at first, but the results are fairly immediate. Once your eye fully heals, you will be able to enjoy clear eyesight without glasses or contact lenses.

There are a few side effects that are common: dry eyes, glares at night, or nighttime halos. In any case, take the time to go through proper consultation with your doctor, and you will be able to increase your chances of avoiding these side effects.

The benefits far outweigh the risks, however. With LASIK, you can finally see the world clearly on your own, with excellent results.

What Is iLASIK?

While other LASIK eye surgeries may be adapted to fit your eyes’ needs, no eye surgery option matches the level of customization that you can enjoy with custom iLASIK. With custom iLASIK, the procedure is designed to match your eye’s specific needs and characteristics. The complete package includes:

  • VISX Wavescran Wavefront ™ Diagnostics
  • VISX Advanced CustomVue™ Treatment
  • VISX Star S4 Iris Registration™ Excimer Laser
  • Intralase ™ Femtosecond Laser

How Does iLASIK work?

First, all the measurements of your eyes and eyesight are taken. These include all the subtle and tiny variations that come with each person’s unique eyes.

The curvature of your cornea is measured and a blueprint of your eye is created. Second, the thin corneal flap is created with a computer-guided and ultra-fast laser.

By using this laser to create the flap, the underneath surface (which will be operated on) is much more optimal. The procedure is performed within a matter of minutes.

In fact, 3D eye tracking can watch your eye and make sure that the laser compensates for unexpected movement. This reduces the risk of error and damage, while still ensuring that your eye will receive the custom treatment it needs.

How Effective Is iLASIK?

Custom iLASIK is considered to be safer and produces better results than the earlier versions of LASIK that have been developed over the years. This is why custom iLASIK is used by NASA astronauts and all branches of the U.S. Military.

With reliable and effective results, you too can be free of eyeglasses and contact lenses. In fact, compared to the earlier methods of LASIK eye surgery, more people are reporting 20/20 or better vision from custom iLASIK!

Am I a Good Candidate for LASIK?

You may be a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery if you meet the following requirements:

  •  At least 21 years old
  •  In good health
  •  Your eyes have been in a stable condition for at least one year
  •  No eye disease

If you meet these criteria, then you have a high likelihood of qualifying for the procedure. If you have been told in the past that you do not qualify for LASIK eye surgery, you may wish to get a second opinion.

Some clinics do not perform LASIK for those who suffer from astigmatism or thin corneas.

However, with our custom LASIK surgery in Michigan, you can be sure that you will have the best possible chance of qualifying for LASIK.

While some circumstances may prevent you from qualifying, meeting the age and health requirements is a huge step in the right direction.

With advanced procedures such as iLASIK, you have many more options to choose from – and one of them may be the right one to correct your vision.

While there are conditions that may exclude certain people from candidacy, if you meet the requirements above, you may be a good candidate!

What Are The Advantages of iLASIK?

  •  Blade-free surgery means the superior and more precise corneal flap
  •  Results could be 20/20 vision or better
  •  More advantageous for thinner corneas
  •  Safer and faster healing

NASA and the U.S. Military use iLASIK for servicemen and women. This proves the safety and effectiveness of the procedure. It is the most technologically-advanced system on the market today.

Your LASIK Self-Evaluation

Considering having LASIK, but you are not sure whether or not you should? Here are a few questions to ask yourself when performing a LASIK self-evaluation:

  • Do you have trouble seeing far away or up close?
  • Would you benefit from not needing to wear contact lenses or glasses when playing sports? If so, how important is this to you?
  • Are you over the age of 21?
  • How important would it be for you to have the ability to read without needing glasses?
  • Do you wear glasses or contact lenses to correct your vision?
  • Would you find an improvement in your work life if you were not hindered by glasses or contact lenses?
  • While laser eye correction is a generally safe procedure, there are risks involved with it – much like any other surgical procedure. Are you willing to discuss these risks at length with a LASIK professional?
